Waipakihi River Camping

Sometimes it’s nice to be able to go camping somewhere in the mountains without the requirement to book a hut/campsite and the freedom to camp where you like. This is the North Island hike that never fails to scratch that itch.

This area is a somewhat underrated amongst people heading out on the trails, although it’s very popular with deer hunters during the roar. You get a slice of the South Island alpine experience here with the layers of mountain ranges and beech tree lined river valleys.

There are no huts and no toilets- be sure to prepare for this accordingly!
