The Rees Dart Track
My brother and I often use the new year period as an opportunity to get away, some years on a hike such as the Waiau Pass Route and other years on overseas trips. This year saw us heading down to Queenstown with the intention to do a hike in the Fiordland/Aspiring National park area.
We had no set itinerary, just flights and a rental car booked and 8 days to spend how we saw fit. Arriving into Queenstown, we decided the Rees Dart Track with Cascade Saddle would be the trip to do. We went shopping for supplies and set out towards Glenorchy. The shuttles only leave in the mornings so we spent our first night at Routeburn Flats Hut and made it back to Glenorchy with just a couple minutes to spare!
It’s easy to say this is one of my favourite trips yet - The perfect combination of terrain if you ask me. We had expansive river valleys, gorgeous forests, two epic alpine passes, many stream crossings, the Dart Glacier and tot our surprise equipped huts with flush toilets.
The walk itself was a step above your standard great walk difficulty wise but I think most people with a bit of hiking experience and reasonable fitness would be absolutely fine.
