Cape Brett Track

For a couple years I’ve had a friend of mine tell me that this is his favourite walk in the North Island and given he has been all over the country as a private tour guide, he tends to have pretty reliable with his suggestions! I had booked this in once before, only to have a crazy rain storm (Worst in decades) cancel the plans.

Finally, that friend of mine organised for a bunch of us to head up there last summer and spend a couple of nights at the hut. I have to say he was spot on, it really is such a fantastic place to visit.

We had one of the local Maori residents, Bob, take us out to Deep Water Cove where we started the short version of this walk. He’s a really great guy and on the way there he would slow down often and tell us stories and random bits of trivia about the area. After the hike when he took us back to the car, he even let us snorkel at a shallow reef on the outskirts of deepwater cove.

Try and spend two nights here to really make the most of the location and to make it a nice relaxing trip. There is a great sheltered swimming spot just down from the hut with plenty of fish and kelp/reef formations. A cheeky little seal even swam by at one point!

The only sucky part of the weekend - we had to carry all our water (7kgs!) as the hut water tank has issues. This is being fixed soon though according to DOC.
