Welcome Flat Hut
I have a friend who has pretty much seen and done it all when it comes to New Zealand. He found himself working as a tour guide taking tourists on road trips around New Zealand for a few years and always has a few stories to tell from these adventures.
Having completed a good majority of the Great Walks plus a bunch of other hikes, I decided to see what his favourite hiking trail from the North and South Island were. He was quick to answer and to my surprise it wasn’t any of the great walks, but instead it was taking the Copland Track to Welcome Flat Hut.
This wasn’t on my radar at all but having completed it I now understand why he loves it so much. It may not have the dramatic alpine views of the Kepler Track or the amazing alpine lakes of the Routeburn Tack, however it had a lot going for it. The hut is a fantastic serviced hut (with a bookable private room that has it’s own wetback hot shower), he forest the whole way is lush and green from all the rainfall with water and streams all over the place, there are so many dramatic bridges to cross. Most improtantly though is the Welcome Flat hot pools. You get to sit in one of the many pools on offer and marvel at the dramatic sieera range and listen to the icefall and raging rivers coming down it as you soak and unwind in the pools.
