The Routeburn - Caples Track
The Routeburn Track is one of my favourites and the evidence of this is that I have walked it about 4 times over the years. Each time involved different seasons, weather and company, making each trip memorable in their own ways.
This time my brother and I decided to set out on a more ambitious journey. We would combine the Routeburn and Caples track and complete the hike over 3 days. The Routeburn has always felt a bit too short for me and this was the perfect chance to enjoy the trail once again but also cover some new ground on the Caples Track.
We were really lucky with the weather, enjoying clear skies along the entirety of the Routeburn and only getting some light rain on the final day. The scenery on both trails is incredible, and I can see why the guided tours frequent the Greenstone/Caples. Fewer crowds, beautiful mountain valleys and a shorter trip back to Queenstown.
I’m sure I’ll be back on the Routeburn again some day, likely with a new variation to boot. I’ve been eyeing up some of the more technical side trip options. Watch this space.
