Isthmus Peak

Passing through Wanaka during the summer I found myself driving past the carpark for the Roy’s Peak Track made me uneasy… There must have been 200 cars at the trailhead with what I would imagine to be a huge line to take photos at the top. Not really my vibe at all and I think I’ll come back to that trail in the cooler months where it’s hopefully less busy.

Instead, one of my friends had been up Isthmus Peak and said the views were pretty much as good without with ridiculous crowds. I found out there is a legal way to camp nearby and so I set off on an overnight trip with a fantastic weather forecast ahead of me.

If you end up going here, make sure you have a range of tent pegs, especially the sand type as the soils here are quite fragile.
