Heaphy Track
I started this project hoping to give more praise to hikes other that the excellent network of great walks throughout New Zealand as they generally do offer fantastic experiences in the back country. But going through all the trips I’ve done I have to admit- all of the ‘Great Walk’ hikes truely are worth the cost and effort to do with the Heaphy Track being one of the standouts. Albeit a few downsides I will address in a future post.
I love getting above the tree line when I’m down in the South Island and the dramatic valleys and scale it brings in a hike when you can see all that’s around you while walking. I was somewhat concerned to see that this hike didn’t really seem to do that. Everything else that it came to offer really made up for that and I even found a side trip that took me up to 1248m to get my fix for being up high! The forests throughout the whole walk are so lush and green with trails often lined with moss on both sides. The beach section is unbelievably beautiful and the limestone cliffs, hot humid summer day and tropical palm trees everywhere really had me thinking I was back in Thailand. And all the other great memories I experienced throughout made it a trip I won’t soon be forgetting!
